Frequently asked questions

What does German level A1 mean?

A1 is the first CEFR level. At this level, you can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases, introduce yourself and others, ask and answer simple questions about personal details, and communicate in a simple way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

What happens in the A1 course?

In this course, you follow Mara as she arrives in Munich and starts from scratch. You go through her first year with topics like introducing yourself, finding a home, shopping, seeing a doctor, working and dealing with the authorities. The course works story by story in short units, where you listen to conversations and practise along.

Can I start the A1 course with no German at all?

This course is made for beginners, so you can start with no German at all. You follow the story picture by picture, listen in and practise in short units, which helps you get into the language step by step.

What comes after A1 if I want to work or train in Germany?

After A1, the next levels are A2, B1 and B2. For a visa for vocational training, you normally need B1, and for nursing training the required level is B1 or B2 depending on the federal state. If you want to work in healthcare, we recommend aiming for B2 rather than stopping at the minimum, and this course is the first step before the higher levels in the app.
