Frequently asked questions

What does German level B1 mean?

At B1, you reach the first level of an independent user. You can understand the main points in clear standard German on familiar topics, handle most situations while travelling, write simple connected texts, and describe experiences and plans with brief reasons.

What do I need German B1 for in Germany?

B1 can matter for different steps in Germany, depending on your goal. For vocational training visas, you normally need B1, for nursing training the requirement is B1 or B2 depending on the federal state, and German citizenship requires B1.

What happens in the B1 course?

In this course, you follow Mara from Manila in her third year in Germany. She works as a care assistant in a nursing home in Munich and wants to start nursing training, and you practise through short story-based units about housing, shopping, education, leisure, food, travel, health, work, the authorities, and more by listening, speaking, and following the conversations.

Can I practise for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 in the app?

You can practise with mock exams in the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 format for reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The course also trains individual exam parts, and in the speaking part you practise with an AI exam partner.

Which words will I learn?

In this course, you learn useful B1 words such as die Wohnungsanzeige (flat advert), die Besichtigung (viewing), der Mietvertrag (tenancy agreement), die Kaution (deposit), die Warmmiete (rent including heating), die Nebenkosten (additional costs), der Vermieter (landlord), and die Wohngemeinschaft (flat share). These examples come from the course story and everyday situations in Germany.
